The Perfume Magazine talks with Sabine Poncet, creator of her new perfume Eau Eternelle-

Sabine, when you decide to create a fragrance for the niche market?

Being able to create my own fragrance and share it with people having the same passion was always what I wanted to do. It was just a matter of time and experience before I decided to get started.

I fell in love with perfumes in my pre-teens, my Aunt had a dresser filled with the most exquisite bottles of perfumes, and I was mesmerized. I collected miniature bottles in my youth, and later on went to Grasse to learn more about oils and perfume making.
I worked for large groups and family businesses in the perfume industry in both marketing and sales. What I enjoyed the most was working with the niche brands.

Niche fragrances are reviving the art of perfumery by sharing daring compositions, unique blends that transport their audience in a different World, a different place, or a different time. It is enjoying life at its best, just like taking the time to savor a cup of great burgundy wine by the fire place with your significant over, or enjoying the warm summer breeze on a tropical beach.

Tell us about your fragrance? How did you come up with the composition and notes?

Eau Eau Eternelle has been inspired by a paint on acrylic given to my daughter by a local artist friend here in Chicago. The scenery made me think of the garden of Monet in Giverny. The garden has a lovely pond with water lilies on it and fragrant flowers all around it. This is the image I intended to capture and share with everyone.
I woI worked with an American perfumer and gave him the main notes I envisioned for the blend. We worked together on the formula for a year and came up with a nice fruity floral bouquet.

Was it something that you had a distinct vision about or did it evolve?

I knew exactly what I was looking for, and all the work done on the formula since its original draft reflects my vision.

Your past has been tied to many niche and upscale perfume houses; did that help with your vision?

Working with other Houses did not help my vision as I am bringing art and perfume together; it is a very distinct concept than Mugler who was influenced by the stars, comic books, and childhood memories; or Amouage who is sharing stories through its magnificent blends.

On the other hand, it helped me understanding the manufacturing process, the marketing behind it, and the importance of supporting the retailers.

Sabine, with the economy as it is today, you still felt comfortable moving ahead on producing your new fragrance, any regrets so far?

The economy is not at its best, but America always bounced back, and the creation of small businesses has always helped the US to go through the worst economic depressions. I love America and I trust it will recover. As a small business owner, I am trying my best to work with American suppliers. For instance the Eau Eternelle blend is made in New York, and the hand painted silk scarf that is part of my collection of accessories is made in California. The cost is indeed much higher than making it abroad, but it is important for me to contribute to the economic recovery, even in a small way.
