Liz Zorn’s Leather Krem is one of three fragrances she released this summer in her Soivohle Eau de Toilette collection. A professed fan of leather scents and gourmands, I fell head over heels in love with Leather Krem. This perfume is one of my favorite fragrance releases of 2011 thus far.

It is one of the most creative gourmands I have ever had the pleasure of sniffing, and one of the most lovely leather scents I have ever had the pleasure of sniffing as well. The combination of both is a unique one; Liz has succeeded in creating a scent that could appeal to both men and women. Leather Krem brilliantly straddles the line between rugged masculinity and sweet femininity.

The initial spray of Leather Krem smells burnt. Indeed, the top notes work together to create the perfect crème brûlée: freshly torched and ready to be savored. Admittedly, the initial burned smell is a difficult one to push through. Underneath the charred top, one can smell a sugary caramelized crust, the hint of vanilla, and the milky creaminess of an eggy custard. There is also a hint of orange zest; really and truly, this is a gourmand for the gourmand connoisseur. There is nothing fake or overly sugary sweet about this fragrance, despite its being modeled over one of the sweetest desserts in existence. It is just perfect.

The burnt edge of Leather Krem is long-lasting: it actually stays throughout the lifespan of the fragrance. Luckily, it has a low to average sillage, which is nice -I imagine that some people would be confused about the smell of burning food. I personally find it to be both comforting and sensual.

As the citrusy milkiness of the top notes fade, the delicious leather that makes up the heart of this fragrance emerges. This is not a “new car smell” sort of leather, all chemical and harsh. This is the leather of your well-worn, well-loved leather jacket. This is the ultimate comfort scent. It pairs well with the caramel, which transitions from a crispy crust to a sweeter, stickier glaze.

The marriage of body-warmed leather and sticky caramel lasts for quite a long time. As the scent progresses, the leather becomes sweeter and less pronounced, until it fades into a warm, woody scent. The woods in Leather Krem are reminiscent of a bonfire, just put out. It is less of a smoky, deeply woody scent and more of a lightly powdered, ashy sort of wood. It is cozy, like wearing one’s favorite sweater, and will be perfect in the coming cooler months.

Leather Krem is available from Liz Zorn’s website, and comes in three different sizes: a 35ml spray flacon ($60USD), a 5ml mini spray ($14USD), and a 0.8ml sample vial ($3USD).
